I created TravelDoc to offer fast, reliable access to a doctor no matter where you are—whether you’re traveling or living in a remote village. Over time, I realized this mission goes far beyond tourism. In rural communities across Europe, people struggle every day to access even basic healthcare services. That’s why I’m proud to be part of RURACTIVE, a European project focused on bringing urgent care and telemedicine to underserved areas—starting with rural Spain.
What is RURACTIVE and Why Does It Matter?
RURACTIVE is a European initiative that supports innovation and community-led development in rural areas. One of its main goals is to close the healthcare gap by promoting digital health solutions. We’re working alongside incredible partners like Vyva, a company that develops AI-powered tools to support medical professionals and improve patient care—especially for older adults. Their technologies help enhance diagnosis, remote monitoring, and even co-living health models.
Another essential partner is the Diputación de Zamora, which is leading efforts to modernize health services across Castile and León. Their support helps us bring prescription access and online doctor consultations to residents who often have no local clinic nearby.
How Telemedicine is Improving Access to Doctors in Rural Spain
In Spain, the healthcare system is known for its high quality, but access for non-residents and rural populations can be limited. Tourists often don’t realize that public hospitals require upfront payments unless you’re from the EU and have a valid EHIC card. In small towns and remote areas, even locals may have to travel long distances to see a doctor, especially a specialist.
